Sustainable Urban Development
Strengthening our exchanges around an issue that is vital to Europe and China alike
1 in 2 people in the world lives in an urban environment, against 1 in 10 in 1980. The totality of world population growth between 2000 and 2030 will happen in the world’s urban areas. During that period, the world’s population will increase by 2 billion, as well as the urban population.
By 2100, 80% of the world’s population will live in cities.
World cities only represent 2.8% of the planet’s surface, yet they account for 78% of carbon emissions, 76% of wood use and they consume 60% of the water.
Europe and China are facing today fundamental environmental issues relating to the speedy expansion of their urban centres.
A key objective: achieving balanced urban development while controlling environmental and human issues.
The needs of Chinese communities are substantial in this regard, in keeping with their will to act in a way that supports application of those essential principles.
By integrating that forward-looking theme, China Europa 2009 intends to provide European companies with an opportunity to promote their know-how and to gain new markets.
Local and regional authorities will also have the benefit of a one-stop showcase, where they can put an international spotlight on their projects and best practices in front of a group of potential investors.
